26-year-old Royston Drenthe has a chance to get back to the Premier League after nearly retiring a year ago.
The Dutch winger’s agent Fabian Veldwijk confirmed to Dutch outfit NUsport that a 3-year deal will be signed with recently relegated Reading, giving the former Real Madrid and Everton player another chance in England.
After almost retiring, Drenthe signed for Russia’s Alania Vladikavkaz in February, playing in six matches and scored three goals – all on a hat trick in his fifth match.
Thought of as the next rising star at 20 years old, Drenthe played fewer and fewer minutes each year with Real Madrid before going on loan to Hercules and Everton.
He fell out with the manager at Hercules towards the end of the season, and was told to stay away from Goodison Park after multiple breaches of discipline. Before David Moyes shut Drenthe out, it was though he was headed for a permanent deal at Everton.
Last May, he called out Lionel Messi for making repeated racist remarks. He barely played in the 2012 calendar year before his brief move to Russia.
This represents not only a big coup for Drenthe to return to England, but also for Reading, who grab a big name and big talent in their quest to return to the Premier League.
The Reading Chronicle is also reporting that they are in for £8 million ($12.6 million) Celtic striker Gary Hooper. That would shatter their transfer record of £3 million ($4.7 million) for Emerse Fae.
