I know it was easy to connect the dots on Kyle Beckerman’s unexpected addition late Friday to the United States roster ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier. But remember, we can sometimes add 2 + 2 … and somehow come up with 5.
Beckerman plays holding midfield and was once a Klinsmann favorite before dropping down the depth chart last fall.
Jermaine Jones was out of the Tuesday’s big win over Panama and is still being worked slowly back into the practices according to concussion protocol. So the natural assumption was that Jones’ odds for a quick lineup re-introduction must be falling.
Not according to U.S. Soccer. I talked to press officer Michael Kammarman late Friday. He told me Jones (pictured with the power sno-fro) was moving along the official post-concussion protocol steps without issue so far. The expectation, he said, was that Jones would be ready by Tuesday.
That could change, of course. But as of now Jones’ recovery is moving apace.
So why add Beckerman? As Kyle Bonn told you yesterday, some of this is just logistics. Beckerman is nearby and available. It’s also about common sense. Injuries had left the United States’ roster one short of the maximum 23 men on roster.
So there was no real reason not to add hard-working RSL midfielder, if only for all the cover possible.
