SALT LAKE CITY – Geoff Cameron was nothing short of outstanding as a fill-in for Jermaine Jones in the United States’ holding midfield spot last week, but Jermaine Jones’ complete recovery from a concussion means the Bundesliga veteran will probably return to the lineup Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Jones left the team’s match in Jamaica back on June 7 with a concussion and was held out of last week’s contest in Seattle. But he successfully completed the step-by-step concussion recovery protocol and was cleared by doctors to play in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier just outside Salt Lake City.
So Klinsmann has two choices ahead on re-shuffling a lineup that performed so well last week in a commanding win over Panama. Choosing between Jones or Cameron for the holding midfield spot is one of them – although the U.S. manager seems highly likely to go back to Jones.
Otherwise, he will also have to choose between Graham Zusi, who has gotten closer and closer to putting a lock on the U.S. right-sided attacking position, or go with Eddie Johnson once again. Johnson performed well there last week, although his game is less well-rounded than Zusi’s. Plus, as a more natural midfielder, Zusi has better defensive tendencies in assisting the team’s make-shift right back Brad Evans.
At his mid-day press conference Monday at Rio Tinto, Klinsmann said he had made his decisions but wasn’t sharing them.
