SALT LAKE CITY – New York Red Bulls forward Tim Cahill is the first Major League Soccer man (current man, that is) to qualify for the World Cup. The Socceroos made their way into the 32-team field for Brazil on Tuesday.
(FYI, they clearly heart Cahill in down under. What says “Love” like having an expressway named after you?)
Beyond the United States performers who earn a living in MLS, there won’t be a bunch from U.S. Soccer’s top tier who find their way to Brazil — but there will be a few.
There will be a handful coming from one or two of the CONCACAF teams. For instance, five regulars from Honduras, tonight’s U.S. opposition in Salt Lake City, earn MLS paychecks and could be on the plane for Brazil if the Catrachos qualify.
Peru is still in the running, with means FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez could find his way to Brazil. Same for Ireland and LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane. Toronto’s Darren O’Dea is a Republic of Ireland international as well.
