Wow. That’s a lot of money.
But the real reason behind this new mega-deal is one thing: Financial fair play.
New rulings are soon set to sweep in across European soccer, as UEFA chief Michel Platini aims to create a level playing field and a more financially stable game amongst Europe’s big boys.
Anyway, this 10-year deal will ensure Chelsea’s status as one of soccer’s leading worldwide brands. And it also helps hugely with the rules around income under the FFF regulations. But recently you saw the fans turning out in support of the West London club in the friendlies against Manchester City in St. Louis and New York. Chelsea are now a huge global club.
So it’s a win-win for both parties. Chelsea get a massive guaranteed income from sponsors each year, while adidas are able to sell copious amounts of jerseys and other replica gear to easily make that money back. Everyone is happy.
But after this deal has been announced, should we expect plenty more long-term contracts to be signed by the soccer powerhouses of Europe? You ‘betcha.
Because, I’m afraid my friends, gone are the days of some small local company or retailer sponsoring or supplying an English Premier League sides kit. Some have tried, and failed miserably. At the end of the day, Nike, adidas, Umbro, whoever they are, guarantee extra sales and top quality merchandise and are able to put their money where their mouth is.
I do feel for Chelsea’s fans though.
Will they have to endure more mammoth billboards across the UK and elsewhere showing Fernando Torres resembling half-man, half-Avatar? I certainly hope not because, in my opinion at least, Chelsea’s latest posters to promote the new adidas home jersey are just creepy and a bit strange.

It just reminds me of the Blue Man Group. And unless David Luiz, Torres and Petr Cech are incredibly good percussionists on the side, I don’t really want visions of them covered in blue paint whizzing through my mind when they’re knocking the ball around Stamford Bridge.
So with adidas around until 2023, let’s hope the blue paint promotions are long gone by then.
