- Chicago are 7-2-6 all-time at home against San Jose
- Mike Magee has scored in all seven games since joining the Fire
- Alan Gordon scored his first goals this season in San Jose’s 3-2 win vs. LA
Chicago are on a roll, but the Goonies are back in town after more late-game heroics.
The Fire are fresh off winning back-to-back games for the first time this season and are unbeaten in five games, Mike Magee’s arrival has coincided with Chicago’s revival as the hometown star has scored seven in seven games since arriving back in his hometown.
While San Jose travel to Chicago tonight, watch on MLS Live at 8:30pm ET, high in confidence after their dramatic victory against the LA Galaxy. Trailing 2-1 going into stoppage time and down a man, San Jose somehow scored twice in time added on to complete a dramatic 3-2 win in front of 50,000 at Stanford Stadium.
This game should be a blood and thunder affair, with both teams high in confidence and full of attacking intent. But they will be missing goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who is away on Gold Cup duty with the USA.
Chicago’s boss Frank Klopas praised the young USMNT ‘keeper for helping his side in the game during their latest win against Columbus.“We had some very good moments and created chances. We scored two goals, but they had some good chances also,” said Klopas. “In a game like that the goalkeeper has to come up big like Sean [Johnson] did and that’s what you have to do to get three points on the road.”
With a long-road trip, facing Chicago tonight and then New England on Saturday, San Jose are struggling with absentees.
Chris Wondolowski, Nana Attakora and Marvin Chavez are all on Gold Cup duty, while Steven Lenhart is out injured and Shea Salinas and Victor Bernardez are suspended after that crazy victory over LA.
Interim head coach Mark Watson was left in awe of the sensational comeback from 2-0 down against the Galaxy, but wasn’t too surprised. “It was amazing to see, but I’m not surprised, because I know the kind of guys we have in the locker room.”
San Jose can climb back into the playoffs with a win, while Chicago will be just two points off a playoff place if they can beat the Quakes. The chance for both teams to get their season back on track awaits, a time game awaits with both teams eager to carry on towards the playoffs. This should be a cracker.
OTHER NOTES: These two teams rarely play each other, with tonight’s game their only meeting of 2013. Last season they only met once, with a 1-1 tie between Chicago and San Jose playing out in Santa Clara.
