Robinho’s complicated transfer to Santos could be nearing a close

With AC Milan desperately looking to offload Robinho, Santos has long been a suitor to bring the Brazilian striker back to his home country.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t been that easy.

What’s been a drawn-out saga now may have a light at the end of the tunnel, with Milan having reportedly dropped their asking price to meet something Santos is willing to offer.

In addition, Italian media outfit Calciomercato are reporting that Robinho has agreed to take a pay cut, making the move that much easier to finish up.

Both teams realize the clock is ticking, as the Brazilian transfer window closes in 9 days on July 15.  That works in Santos’s favor, as Milan have already stated they will not purchase any strikers until Robinho is offloaded, and with a seriously interested party found, the Rossoneri would rue letting that slip away.

Things still aren’t definite though, with Santos president Odilio Rodrigues claiming they’re still mulling over the move.  Calciomercato quoted him as saying, “The operation is still very difficult.  We are reviewing the amount of money offered.”

The move would suit both parties.  AC Milan have been looking to offload Robinho’s salary for a while now.  The 29-year-old was a hit in his first season in Serie A three years ago, scoring 14 goals in 34 league appearances.  Since, however, he’s been moved back to a secondary striker role – a shift that’s been nothing but a disappointment as he’s netted just 8 times in 41 matches.

Santos are doing their best to replace fellow Brazilian Neymar, who moved to Barcelona this summer.

Robinho was, according to his father, not happy that Santos had claimed he player wanted €100,000 ($128,000) per week.  “Robinho was very irritated to hear Santos talk about certain wage demands that he had never made” said Gilvan de Souza. “I don’t know where that money was meant to go, but not to Robinho or Milan.”

Robinho’s father has often represented his son, along with their lawyer Marisa Ramos. Ramos stated Robinho “will accept the fact he’ll be earning much less in order to come back to Santos.”  De Souza a few days ago chided famed agent Mino Raiola for attempting to get his feet wet in the deal, saying “I saw Mino Raiola only once and we are not friends. The only people who deal with Robinho’s affairs are me and our lawyer Marisa Ramos.”

Hopefully for both clubs’ sake this deal gets done, and with the deadline fast approaching, any potential official deal will have to be completed quick.
