Paul Scholes has turned down the chance to join Manchester United’s coaching staff.
Scholes retired from United (for a second time) following the 2012-13 season and had been widely expected to join former Red Devil teammates Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs on David Moyes’ staff. But in a mildly shocking move the former England international has denied the opportunity, citing family reasons.
Moyes spoke of his desire to bring Scholes into his back-room staff to ensure he maintained significant connections to Manchester United. In recent days the Scot has received some criticism for what some are calling the ‘Evertonisation’ of the Old Trafford club.
“I spoke to Paul Scholes as well,” Moyes explained. “He wants to have some time off with his family.”
The open-ended comment suggests that Scholes could eventually join Moyes’ staff and many believe that may happen sometime following the 2014 Brazil World Cup, where it is believed Scholes may be set for pundit work.
While family reasons or pundit work may be Scholes’ primary motives to deny Moyes’ offer, the 38 year old’s decision also could reflect the notion that United’s staff has too many cooks in the kitchen.
Since arriving at Old Trafford Moyes has hired Neville, Giggs and former Everton coaches Steve Round (assistant manager), Chris Woods (goal-keeping coach) and Jimmy Lumsden (first-team coach).
