Five goals and two games later, U.S. national team forward Chris Wondolowski must be seriously considering switching his name to “Wondowloswki.”
After bagging a hat trick in the 6-1 victory over Belize on Tuesday, Wondolowski revealed his superstitious side after he scored all three goals whilst wearing a misspelled jersey with an extra “W” wrongly in his name.
When he switched the jersey back to the correct spelling at half time, he didn’t score.
So when he stepped onto the field on Saturday night in Utah, the San Jose Earthquakes captain had a trick up his sleeve. Or somewhere near his sleeve, I think… it was hidden in his shirt at least.
Wondo had a weapon. An extra “W” had been attached to the inside of his shirt as he took to the field as a 58th minute sub.
Two goals in 27 minutes after coming on is a pretty good return. Wouldn’t you say so? Wondolowski’s strikes helped the U.S. overcome a spirited Cuba side and the man is making quite the name for himself. Literally.
So after scoring five goals in two games with an extra “W” on his shirt, should Wondo adopt this method for his San Jose shirts?
It will be pretty awesome if he does, no pressure. But one thing for certain, jersey mishap aside, Wondolowski has been on fire during the past few games for the USA. Anyone who pays attention to Major League Soccer will know he’s been scoring goals for fun for the last three to four seasons.
Now they’re starting to pour in for the U.S. national team. That can only be a good thing as the World Cup edges ever closer.
Here’s another interesting little fact about Wondolowski. He has a tattoo on his chest displaying his Kiowa tribe name “Bau Daigh” etched on him to reflect his Native American heritage. That translates to “Warrior coming over the hill.”
Well now this warrior has an extra “W”… and boy does he know how to use it.
