Manchester United won’t be offering Wayne Rooney a new contract

In October 2010, Wayne Rooney sent shockwaves through world football by claiming that he was pursuing a transfer to cross-town rival Manchester City.

The reason?

Rooney was a bit miffed at his United employers after being told they had no intention of making him the highest-paid player in English football.

After a week of high drama and sagacious soundbites by Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney and United agreed to a new five year contract worth approximately £250,000 per week ($378,000), the richest in the Premier League.

Rooney’s threat, while doing little to (further) endear himself to United supporters, worked.

This time around the England international won’t be so lucky.

Despite rampant rumors surrounding Rooney’s potential move away from Old Trafford, United chief executive Ed Woodward announced that, despite his current deal running out in two years, they are not planning on handing the 27 year old striker a new contract.

“No contract renewals are being discussed,” said Woodward. “I am not sitting down with any player on an extension and there is no trigger date in the diary. Would we be afraid to run a contract down? Of course not.”

More: It’s time Wayne Rooney cleared the air

After being linked with a number of clubs (Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Arsenal) this summer, Rooney has repeatedly been mentioned by manger David Moyes as a key cog in United’s pursuit of retaining the Premier League title.

This past week the striker was forced to leave United’s pre-season tour in Asia after suffering a hamstring injury.
