‘Unless something drastic happens’ Luis Suarez is staying at Liverpool

Jul 18, 2013, 12:11 PM EST

Suarez

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has taken to the mic to (once again) explain that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is set to remain at Anfield in 2013-14.

But this time the Reds gaffer left himself a little bit of wiggle room explaining that “unless something drastic happens, [Suarez] will be staying here.”

It’s difficult to say what exactly qualifies as “drastic” for Rodgers.

Racially abusing a player?

Biting the arm of a player?

How about Suarez expressly saying that he wants to leave Liverpool?

Thus far, apparently none of these events qualify as rising to the level of “drastic” in the eyes of Rodgers.

There’s a few different ways people can interpret this situation but the over-arching point, although quite simple, is this – Luis Suarez is a ridiculously talented striker and Liverpool are desperate to hold on to him.

For Rodgers and Liverpool (and myself, for that matter), Suarez, along with Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robin van Persie, Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao, is one of the top six strikers in world. And when you own a top six striker in the modern game, you do everything in your power to keep him. Even if that includes taking your fair share of PR hits.

A lot of people were (justifiably) astounded by the $84.5 million (£55.6m) transfer fee that Paris Saint-Germain forked-out this past Tuesday when they purchased Cavani from Napoli.

There’s no getting around it, $84.5 million is a ton of dough. In fact, it represents the fifth largest sum ever paid in a world football transfer fee (following Kaka’s $85m move from AC Milan to Real Madrid, Ibrahimovic’s $90m move from Inter Milan to Barcelona, Zinedine Zidane’s $98 move from Juventus to Real Madrid, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s $121.5m move from Manchester United to Real Madrid).

The fact that one player on a squad of eleven can command that kind of dough is astounding. The sad truth, however, is that kind of fee merely reflects the awesome premium that top-billing strikers have in the game today. That’s the cost of winning.

Defense? It’s for the birds.

So exactly what will constitute “drastic” in the world of Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool such that they will sell Suarez?

A transfer fee that would land Suarez on the list of high-rollers mentioned above.

Until then, expect the Uruguayan wonder to remain at the Kop.
