Club Tijuana may soon be more “American” than some of the pro soccer clubs from the United States.
The Mexican club from just across the Southern California border already has three United States internationals: Joe Corona, Edgar Castillo and Herculez Gomez.
Corona and Castillo are still with Jurgen Klinsmann’s national team, in fact, now in Baltimore for Sunday’s Gold Cup quarterfinal. Gomez just left the team for some minor knee surgery ahead of the Liga MX season.
It looks like two young Americans, forward Paul Arriola and defender Greg Garza, may play a significant part in the Club Tijuana scene this year.
Not only was Arriola, an 18-year-old Chula Vista, Calif., native on the field Friday at Estadio Caliente for the Xolos, he even delivered a swell assist in the Xolos’ 3-3 draw at home against Atlas. That was Arriola’s debut in a league match; he had previously played in preseason friendlies for the Xolos, who are currently missing several starters.
Greg Garza, 21, a defender from Texas now in his second year with the Mexican club, started at left back Friday.
Arriola (pictured above) was an LA Galaxy Academy product and U.S. under-17 forward who signed in May to play for Club Tijuana.
