Jermaine Defoe and U.S. international Clint Dempsey helped Spurs rebound Saturday from a disappointing opener in the brief Barclays Asia Trophy.
After their team started with a thud against Sunderland, Defoe hit for a hat trick and assisted on Dempsey’s goal in Spurs’ 6-0 victory over South China at Hong Kong Stadium.
It was not a match where Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas would learn much about his defense, but his attack certainly found the rhythm against the overmatched Chinese side, even without the injured Gareth Bale.
Danny Rose was effective along the left, Mousa Dembele was typically busy through the middle and Kyle Walker had his moments coming forward from the right without much worry of anything happening behind him.
Still, Defoe was the scoring star – although this will hardly make Spurs fans stop lusting for striker Roberto Soldado, who is still a Valencia man today.
Defoe was one of two changes for Villas-Boas; the England striker was in for Emmanuel Adebayor. First choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris replaced Heurelho Gomes in goal.
