Borussia Dortmund topped a banged up Bayern Munich 4-2 to secure the German Super Cup and grab a bit of revenge for the Champions League final.
Marco Reus bagged a brace, and Ilkay Gundogan hit the back of the net as well.
Arjen Robben carried over his fine form from the end of last season by scoring twice for Bayern, but it was not enough to overcome the injured trio of Franck Ribery, Mario Goetze, and Manuel Neuer. Bastian Schweinsteiger was also not 100%, and only found the pitch as a 67th-minute substitute with debutant Thiago Alcantara starting in his place.
It was the competitive debut for both Thiago and Bayern manager Pep Guardiola.
Neuer’s replacement in goal Tom Starke had a horror showing, fumbling a cross that led to Reus’s first goal, a header from a Robert Lewandowski cross just six minutes in.
Robben equalized nine minutes after halftime, but just two minutes later disaster again at the back for the Bavarians saw Gundogan’s cross bafflingly headed into his own net by Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten from a long way out.
Gundogan then made it a two-goal lead for Die Schwarzgelben with a curling shot from just inside the box after he had slammed on the brakes to lose Thomas Muller defending.
Robben brought Munich back within one soon after to cap a wild 10 minutes which saw four goals, but it wouldn’t be enough as Dortmund’s defense clamped down and Reus’s second flew in two minutes from full time. New Dortmund signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had come on seconds earlier, grabbed the assist as manager Jurgen Klopp celebrated by slapping his bench’s overhang.
It could have been an even larger scoreline for Dortmund had the linesman not decided Bayern-target Lewandowski strayed marginally offsides before netting in the 8th minute.
Guardiola will be scratching his head at the defensive performance from a side that allowed just 18 goals in the Bundesliga all of last season.
