This morning sad news is filtering in from Qatar, as Ecuadorian international striker Christian Benitez has died after allegedly having severe stomach pains and heart failure.

Although initially reports suggested that Benitez was involved in a car crash, it now seems as though he suffered a heart attack after making his debut for Qatari side El Jaish and his heart failed hours later, the Ecuador Football Federation said.

The heat in Qatar was thought to be over 108 degrees during the past few days.

Benitez, 27, had signed for El Jaish in a $16 million deal just over three weeks ago after having yet another impressive season with Club América in Liga MX. Known as ‘Chucho’ the diminutive yet extremely powerful forward scored 140 goals in 303 career appearances.

More information is sure to come on Benitez’ tragic death in the following days.

Chucho’s talent was undoubted and last season with América was his most successful, as he hit 30 goals in 43 games and led the Mexico City based club to the 2013 Clausura title. Benitez was also the top goalscorer in Liga MX and led the line for Ecuador’s national team, as they are near certainties to make the World Cup in Brazil next summer.

Sadly the brightest talent in Ecuadorian soccer has been taken from us at such a young age. And we won’t get to see him shine at the World Cup next summer, after he appeared during the 2006 tournament when Ecuador reached the knockout stages for the first-time in the history. His goals and performances over the past few years leave Ecuador as strong favorites to qualify for Brazil 2014.

Benitez excelled in Mexico and Ecuador but also had a season in the Premier League, as he spent the 2009-10 campaign on loan at Birmingham City. That year the Blues finished in ninth place, their highest finish for over 51 years and City sent out this message in remembrance of Benitez.

Benitez’ death was announced by Qatari club El Jaish, who he had just signed for:

“The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to the family of the player. Benitez had recently joined the club from Club America for three seasons. The player participated for the first time with the team during yesterday’s match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup without complaining of any health problems. His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character.”

Benitez’ ex-Birmingham City teammates Craig Gardner, who now plays for Sunderland, tweeted out the following message.

As more details arrive throughout the coming days we will update you on this story.

Rest in peace, Christian ‘Chucho’ Benitez.
