Clint Dempsey seen at San Francisco airport – MLS rumors fly

Silly season, oh silly season.

With Twitter abound that Clint Demspey was on his way back to Major League Soccer, it appeared that one of the more ridiculous rumors was making its way around social media.

Ridiculous, until some evidence cropped up.

It may be nothing or it may be something, but whatever you want to make of it, Clint Dempsey was spotted in the customs section of the San Francisco airport. Not only that, but he was apparently headed to Seattle. Gotta love social media.

[UPDATE: Guess Seattle isn’t his final destination.  Keep an eye on this. Still odd he’s in the U.S. while his team is supposedly playing in France Saturday. Could be for a host of reasons, but worth keeping an eye out.]

Before all the pictures started popping up, Seattle and Portland were the two teams rumored to be in for Demps. Portland have the top allocation spot.

Earlier, Fox Soccer anchor Keith Costigan tweeted this which fueled all the original rumors about Seattle:

This is all heavily speculative, but it’s also incredibly interesting.

With that in mind, Tottenham Hotspur are supposed to head to Monaco to play a friendly with the reborn French Ligue 1 side on Saturday, so it’s odd he would be in the United States in the first place.

To cap it all off, he was spotted in London’s Heathrow airport just a day ago.  Seems our USMNT captain is logging some serious miles.

Stay tuned, folks.

As a Sounders fan, until the ink is dry, I’m assuming he’s merely flying into SeaTac because he couldn’t get on a flight to PDX. Portland holds the #1 allocation spot, and unless he’s allergic to flannel and ironic facial hair, I don’t see how they let that go to their biggest rival.

True, these rumors are far fetched. But stars like Dempsey can go where ever they want in the world thus allocation means very little. Yes, whoever has the top spot would get compensation, but all Dempsey just has to say is Seattle or nothing. Portland can try and hold out, but why would they? They would be getting something for an allocation spot that many teams end up getting nothing out of.

I can’t imagine he would agree to that. The guy is one year out from demanding champions league experience and now we are to believe he wants back in the MLS?! Very far-fetched idea. Sorry. Not buying this ridiculous story.

Not too ridiculous. He wants to play. He doesn’t figure in Spurs’ plans, so he’ll go someplace he can get on the pitch. Orchestrating the move from Fulham does not look too wise in retrospect.

He’s headed to LA to meet up with Everton. At least that’s the word from a Spurs fan site.

I hope that is true. Would love to see him at Everton, and I think they could use him too.

Please no! Dempsey is wayy too good to play for the Sounders!

    Oh give me a break…

I wish I was the one who made this rumor up, I would have said Columbus.

FC Dallas could sure youse him. And he’d be close to his hometown, so there’s that.

      *use him.

Good. I’m glad. Spurs could use the roster space.

I heard over a month ago rumors about clint dempsey to seattle, i thought it could never happen but now its quiet interesting, also Maybe LA i heard they had two DPs they were going after, one being Anderson at Man U, who already said he wants to say where he is and the other name was not at ligerty to be given away, now it just makes me wonder if la could be a destination.

  9. geojock - Aug 2, 2013 at 9:20 AM

He has made it very clear he is not interested in MLS. Maybe things have changed but I doubt it. Texas is his home anyways.

    Three words: Ev Er Ton!!!

Dempsey currently makes $3 million a year, before bonuses and seems quite content in the EPL; in order a for a team to lure Dempsey away, they would need to offer at least $4 million a year, I’d guess, given his recent form, he would push for at least $5 million a year which would make him the highest paid player in MLS. Seattle could pay Dempsey it if they want to pony up for it(open DP spot now that Joseph has been restructured) but I don’t see it happening.

What’s wrong with going back to MLS?
