As we know, all the pressure of a penalty kicks falls on the shooter. So the seconds before a shot from the 12-yard spot can undo a man of lesser confidence
Now imagine having not seconds to think about it, but nearly an hour.
Real Salt Lake and Colorado were into the 20th minute of their Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry, tied at 1-1. Colorado veteran center back Drew Moor fouled RSL Robbie Findley, supplying the home team at DSG Park with a wonderful chance to pull ahead.
But … before the penalty kick could be taken, referee Fotis Bazakos suspended the match due to lightning in the area.
Talk about icing the kicker; Alvaro Saborio is the man usually taking these things for RSL, and he cannot be happy about this. But it is surely the correct choice. At the moment some kind of danger (to the players, fans, match officials … everyone not indoors) there really is not choice to be made. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.
DSG Park was the site of the surreal, captivatingly snowy white scenes last March as match officials waved “Play on!” during a snow storm, when the United States defeated an infuriated Costa Rican side in World Cup qualifying.
(UPDATE, 10:01 ET … The match resumed after about an hour delay. Saborio converted the penalty kick for a 2-1 lead.)
