For the third time this summer, Cardiff City have broken their transfer record, snatching up Chilean midfielder Gary Medel from Sevilla.
A fantastic signing, Cardiff find themselves on the receiving end of a true enforcer in the middle for a fee in the range of £10 million ($15.5 million) and has signed a four-year deal.
The deal is subject to a work permit being granted.
Medel will most likely miss a few matches in the upcoming season, not because he’s injury prone but because a player of his nature can’t help but rack up the bookings. Last season in La Liga, the 26-year-old picked up 8 yellow cards and was sent off twice. Over the last two seasons he’s been cautioned by the referee 23 times.
Although primarily a physical presence in the midfield, Medel is also highly capable in front of goal. He grabbed six goals last year for Sevilla, and won’t hesitate have a go with his right foot. He also provides a strong presence in the air despite being just 5-foot-7.
Medel also has 51 caps for the Chilean national team, scoring four goals and playing in the 2010 World Cup.
With the new boys doing their best to avoid relegation in their first top flight season since 2004, Malky Mackay and the rest of the Cardiff front office have gone for quality not quantity when picking out transfer targets.
Cardiff have also this summer grabbed center back Stephen Caulker from Tottenham Hotspur for approximately £6.9 million ($10.7 million) as well as young striker Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen for £6.5 million ($10.1 million).
