Do you have a podcast? Perhaps a public access television show? Do you do and your friends do a UStream-thing? Maybe you have a LiveJournal, a column in your high school newspaper, or a niece with an upcoming bat mitzvah?

If you have an outlet, Clint Dempsey was ready to promote on Monday. The Seattle Sounder was in New York on Monday, put front in center as Major League Soccer had him do the media rounds. Talking to a number of mainstream, not-necessary-sport audiences, Clint managed to avoid incredulity while repeatedly explaining why he left England, whether the U.S. will win the World Cup … why soccer players can’t use their hands.

Okay, maybe he didn’t get asked that last question, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he was. I’d also bet money on somebody wondering whether he knows “that Alex Morgan.”

Compiled from the Twitter feeds of Seattle Times correspondent Joshua Mayers and MLS Executive Vice President of Communications Dan Courtemanche, here’s who we can determine interviewed Clint Dempsey on Monday:

  • Good Morning America
  • The New York Times
  • CNN
  • Sports Illustrated
  • MSNBC’s Morning Joe
  • The television version of ESPN FC
  • ESPN Radio

Oh, we forgot one! Here’s Deuce’s interview with The Dan Patrick Show, where ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio was filling in:

Nice to see Florio, the NFL guru, ask the beyond cliche hey soccer guy what would you think kicking in the NFL type of question.

It’s sad they can’t think of something more intelligent to say. We would know more about football then to ask if they could play goalie for a soccer team.

It’s a shame that Florio was covering for Dan Patrick to perform such a monotonous Clint Dempsey interview. I understand he’s a NFL guy, but if you are going to act as a cover up sport reporter, at least leave your NFL complex-minded out the door when interviewing other athletes who have nothing to do with the NFL. What could anyone expect from such a myopic individual like Florio? Nothing good at all.

When the second question is “where is soccer compared to other sports” question you know the interviewer knows nothing about soccer. I realize it is petty, but saying “the” MLS also is a clue to knowing the clueless. If I remember correctly when he said it, even Clint paused before he answered, like, he wanted to correct Florio, but decided against it.

Yeah, but that question is kinda topical here, because the Clint Dempsey signing is one of those that says something about the state of the game here.
