USL launches investigation into alleged racism from Richmond Kickers fans

Aug 15, 2013, 2:15 PM EDT

The Richmond Kickers’ USL Pro title-clinching 2-0 win over Orlando City SC on Wednesday has been overshadowed by allegations of racist remarks from the stands. Orlando City defender Kevin Ellis (pictured), on loan from Sporting Kansas City, had an altercation with several Kickers fans, according to a statement from the league.

“USL has initiated an investigation into an alleged incident between Orlando City player Kevin Ellis and a small group of Richmond Kickers fans at Wednesday night’s match at City Stadium in Richmond,” the statement reads. “League officials are working actively to gather information from various parties. USL PRO and its clubs strongly condemn all forms of abuse and will not tolerate any such actions from its players, coaches, fans, or anyone in involved with the league.”

Ellis posted on Twitter after the match about the incident, but those tweets have since been deleted.

On Thursday, Kickers fans responded to the allegations using the same medium:

Kevin Ellis is a whiner who provoked the fans and then fled to Twitter to make himself the victim.

His behavior is typical both of Orlando City’s players and fans, and are likely why they are the most hated team in USL PRO.

One hopes that when Ellis is shown to have lied about this, you will run a similar article and not just bury a correction somewhere else on the NBC Sports family of websites.

Why the hate? Orlando City is just a city that is excited about its soccer team. Kevin Ellis is a Sporting KC Loanee. Why not blast Sporting KC about their player who is under contract with them, not Orlando City. All Orlando is trying to do is get a few quality players in and try to win a game. This whole nonsense about Orlando City fans etc. is just hating and jealousy. Hey, you do not like the way Orlando is going about trying to get into MLS, say that but to come out and hate on all Orlando fans is out of bounds. Why would you get upset about enthusiastic fans. I don’t get it. I think you are off base when you criticize Orlando City players and fans because all fans are not the same. Orlando also has some humble players. I don’t agree with you.

I think even MLS fans hate Orlando City. Their fans are always cocky and act like they’re gonna be in the MLS.

Wow… if this turns out to be untrue then he should be ashamed. He could be in a country where racism is actually a problem… we see those stories all the time.

    Why should I be ashamed?
