The massive FIFA World Cup tickets sale is on!

The United States was one of the top five countries in ticket request as the massive World Cup ticket sale began this morning, according to FIFA.

The most requests came from Brazil (the host nation), Argentina, Chile and England, in addition to the United States, FIFA revealed on its Twitter account.

Officials for world soccer’s governing body also said it accepted more than one million ticket requests in just under seven hours. The on-line applicants will not know, however, until October if they have been selected to receive the tickets in a random draw of requests.

In total, more than 163,000 people requested tickets today. Demand  was highest for the high-priced opener in Sao Paulo, for the more highly price final at the Maracana Rio de Janeiro, and for the semifinals.

The United States has always been a big player in these on-line draws for tickets – although that does not necessarily mean these applicants are looking to watch the United States national team. In a nation of immigrants, there are plenty of citizens with money for travel to watch Mexico, Brazil, England, etc.
