Manchester United and Liverpool have been drawn together to face off in the third round of the Capital One Cup on the week of September 23rd.
The match, which will be held at Old Trafford, has the added bonus of being the first fixture that Luis Suarez will be available to appear in following his 10 match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic last spring. It has been nearly 23 years since the two sides last met in the competition, with United winning out 3-1 at home.
Eight other Premier League squads have been drawn together for the third round.
Tottenham head to Villa Park for an intriguing match with Paul Lambert‘s men following their 3-0 drubbing of League One side Rotherham. West Ham United will host Cardiff City after the Hammers defeated Cheltenham 2-1 and the Bluebirds got past League Two side Accrington Stanley 2-0. West Bromwich Albion face a difficult matchup at Arsenal following the Baggies 3-0 win over Newport where 20 year old Saido Berahino netted a hat-trick. In the final all top-flight matchup, Fulham travel to Goodison Park to face Everton after the Cottagers eked out a 5-4 penalty kick victory over Burton and Everton needed extra time to squeak past Stevenage 2-1.
Elsewhere, Manchester City will host Wigan in a rematch of last season’s FA Cup final, while Chelsea travel to League One Swindon Town, who eliminated QPR with a 2-0 win on Tuesday.
In matches involving other Premier League clubs Southampton hosts Bristol City, Sunderland welcomes Peterborough, Newcastle face Leeds, Stoke City heads to Tranmere, Watford plays Norwich City and holders Swansea City will travel to the Midlands to meet Championship side Birmingham.
