Mexico in a great deal of trouble after losing to Honduras at Azteca

Things could be coming to a close for manager Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Toure as Mexico continue to falter at home in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

The Hondurans overcame a goal deficit to beat Mexico at Azteca 2-1 thanks to second-half goals by Jerry Bengston and Carlos Costly.

The defeat is the first for Mexico at Azteca in their last 27 home World Cup qualifying matches, and just their second in their last 78.

It leaves Mexico with just eight points and only three matches remaining.  They remain in fourth place, the position that would earn them a playoff with New Zealand to make it to Brazil should they end up there at the end.  El Tri’s eight points leave them just one ahead of Panama – who drew with Jamaica – and two behind Honduras for an automatic qualifying spot.

The dismay will be with Mexico, who have matches with the US, Panama, and Costa Rica remaining – two of which are on the road.  However, credit must go with Honduras, who endured and could have had more had Bengston hit an open net from five yards later in the match.

If Chepo isn’t fired after this match, he has to be on a short leash.  El Tri now have three draws and a loss in four World Cup qualifying matches at home this round of the Hex, unacceptable for a team that has a long history at their home fortress.  If he doesn’t get the sack immediately, it would seem a foregone conclusion that, qualify or not, Chepo won’t be making it to the World Cup with the Mexican squad.
