AZ Alkmaar shockingly fires manager Gertjan Verbeek

Jozy Altidore‘s former club and the current home of Aron Johannsson have sacked their manager Gertjan Verbeek, much to the surprise of just about anyone.

The club cited a “lack of chemistry” and a “lack of confidence” as their reasons for the firing, despite having the club in 7th position a year after finishing in 10th.  In addition, the club just yesterday defeated league leaders PSV Eindhoven, a very quality side that Johannsson’s ridiculous goal sent packing.

For some unknown reason, the club statement really tossed Verbeek under the bus, saying “the management and supervisory board sees no more basis for further co-operation.”

The 51-year-old has been with Alkmaar since 2010 and had just last year signed a contract extension through 2015.

A press conference held by AZ did little to shed light on the reasons for the firing.

Lack of confidence? What? Alkmaar is 6-1-3 since their loss to Ajax early in the Eredivisie season. They’re in a winnable group in the Europa League (PAOK, Karagandy, Maccabi Haifa) having already picked up 3 points on the road…this move makes no sense to me.

There is a ton more to this than we will ever know unless someone talks. Chances are, they already have his replacement lined up

I agree with both of you guys. This firing doesn’t make sense. Everything what Alkmaar said is probably true, except the lack of confidence part. Alkmaar actually seems like a very confident club. Yesterday’s game proved it. But I have a feeling though that this firing has more to it.

Sounds like inside politics has reared its ugly head in the club.

My personal feeling is that this has to be due to improper behavior like sexual harassment or something similar. It makes no sense for a winning side, which were the champs of their league last year, to suddenly fire their coach.

No, dawg. Alkmaar weren’t champs of the league. That was Ajax. Alkmaar only won the cup last year. Hence Europa League.

    Bring him to Sunderland.

That would be a good idea for him, especially for Jozy. As for Sunderland, I don’t know. But they should look at him.
