You can cross Jermaine Jones off the list of available midfielders for the final round of CONCACAF hexagonal World Cup qualifying.
The 31-year-old will need surgery to fix a meniscus tear, according to German media outlet BILD.
His club, German side Schalke, have not included him in their squad to face Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The article quotes Jones with saying, “It’s true that the club has taken me from the squad so I can take the time to repair my meniscus. Regardless of what the club decided now, surgery eventually would have been inevitable because of the persistent pain.”
This means that it’s very possible Jurgen Klinsmann could be without both Jones and Michael Bradley, his favorite pairing in the middle of the pitch. Bradley is still recovering from the ankle injury he suffered in warmups during the last round of qualifying and it’s unclear whether he will be ready.
The U.S. face Jamaica on October 11 and Panama on October 15, having already qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
