Injury keeps Clint Dempsey from traveling to Colorado

Due to a hamstring injury, Clint Dempsey will not travel to Colorado for the Sounders’ tie with the Rapids Saturday.

It’s the third straight game the midfielder will miss, and his status going forward is still a relative unknown.

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said he’s recovering, but didn’t give any definitive information on Dempsey’s immediate future.

“He’s making progress, he’s getting better, but for him to travel at this stage is probably still a little early” said Schmid.

The Rapids had already admitted they were preparing for the 30-year-old, and will now have to change their strategy.

“We know that (Dempsey) is probably going to be available for the game,” Rapids captain Drew Moor said earlier today. “Whether he plays or not, we can’t worry about that. When he’s on the field, we have to limit his space, limit his touches.”

You can’t blame them for expecting him to take part. Dempsey himself said on Tuesday that he was “feeling good, feeling strong” and added “I’m looking forward to getting on the field. It makes you hungrier in helping these guys do well, but they’ve already been doing well in my absence.”

It’s now certainly possible that Dempsey, the USMNT captain, could miss the World Cup Qualifiers next week against Jamaica and Panama. Jurgen Klinsmann had expected him to be ready to go, but that also was contingent on him being fit for this weekend.

With Michael Bradley already out, the United States could possibly be without their two star outfield players, although World Cup qualification has already been assured.
