Former Liverpool star Kenny Dalglish, who’s had two turns as manager of the side, has now been appointed to the club’s Board of Directors.  Liverpool owner John W. Henry said: “We are delighted Kenny has accepted our offer to join Liverpool as a non-executive board director and we are sure he will make a valuable contribution to the club’s strategy. Kenny has a unique relationship with our supporters and embodies everything that is special about Liverpool.”

Dalglish’s unique relationship with Liverpool supporters is due to his success at the storied club. While a Reds player, he scored 172 goals in 515 appearances, winning the European Championship three times with the club. His time as a player transitioned into his role as player-manager, winning the league three times and nabbing the FA Cup twice. It was he that was at the helm during the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. Dalglish resigned in 1991 and went on to manage Blackburn, Newcastle and Celtic before returning to Liverpool in 2011. He guided the Reds to a League Cup but the side were only able to finish eighth, and so Dalglish got the sack.

His most recent time at the helm aside, Dalglish is still regarded with affection by the Anfield faithful. “King Kenny” returns that devotion, saying, with regards to his appointment on the Board, “I have always said if there is anything I could do to help I would make myself available. It is an honour and privilege to be asked to return to Liverpool.”

Never has a man so humble been so deserving of the the name King.

His last spell in charge was really only a stop gap measure to move on from the Hodgson debacle. J W Henry and co said from the start they were looking for a young innovative manager.
