Geoff Cameron likely to replace Gonzalez in central defense – is Goodson’s injury worse than anticipated?
Oct 8, 2013, 3:17 PM EDT
With Omar Gonzalez ruled out of the upcoming round of World Cup qualifiers, some interesting storylines have emerged.
Gonzalez is the only Unites States player to have played every minute of every qualifier thus far, meaning that no American will finish the hexagonal round playing every minute.
Officially, Michael Orozco has replaced Gonzalez on Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster for the matches. This is significant mainly because it’s not Clarence Goodson.
Many have now speculated that versatile defender Geoff Cameron is in line to replace Gonzalez at the central defender position, partnering with Matt Besler.
The surprising part of all this is that Goodson is nowhere to be found, and Klinsmann would rather move Cameron over to the middle than use a natural central defender who not only started against Mexico but shined.
This may suggest that Goodson’s knee injury he sustained mid-September against Real Salt Lake is worse than anticipated.
Interm Earthquakes manager Mark Watson said at the time, “It’s not a serious injury” but that can now clearly be debated. He hasn’t played since being substituted off in the 71st minute of that match.
With the United States having already qualified for the 2014 World Cup, this doesn’t really make a massive difference. However, Klinsmann would no doubt rather have as many starters available as possible in order to get the chemistry of his preferred first team together with just about a year to go before the big competition.
For example: Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Landon Donovan, and Clint Dempsey have never ever all started a game together under Jurgen Klinsmann. Isn’t that insane? It’s situations like that I’m sure he would like to avoid.
Since Klinsmann put Cameron in at defensive midfielder early in the hexagonal round and used him there as an emergency injury replacement, the 28-year-old has been solely a right-back for both club and country.
However, Klinsmann has only done so experimentally, seemingly preferring Cameron instead at holding defensive midfielder. It’s not farfetched that the coach would rather keep the Massachusetts productin the middle of the pitch rather than out wide given the chance.
