Jose Mourinho fined nearly $13,000 for touchline outburst – Clear to manage Sunday’s match against Manchester City
Oct 24, 2013, 1:00 PM EDT
The English Football Association has fined Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho £8,000 ($12,932) after admitting to a breach of the rules during last weekend’s 4-1 win over Cardiff City.
With about 20 minutes left of the match, Mourinho walked to the sideline and began yelling at referee Anthony Taylor after he asked Branislav Ivanovic to speed up taking a throw-in.
The Portuguese manager was apparently incensed at Taylor’s request after Cardiff, who took an early 1-0 lead, engaged in time-wasting of their own without repurcussion.
Taylor pointed Mourinho off the pitch, leading the 50 year old to take a seat in the stands next to a fan. Mourinho remained there for a short while before being told by an usher to exit the match, which he complied with.
Some believed the Chelsea boss could receive a touchline ban but instead the FA handed him the standard fine after admitting improper conduct.
An FA statement read: “Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been fined £8,000 after he admitted a breach of FA Rule E3 in that his behaviour in or around the 69th minute of his side’s game against Cardiff City on 19 October 2013 amounted to improper conduct.
“The fine is the standard penalty for the offence.”
Mourinho talked about the incident following his side’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Schalke on Tuesday: “What the referee wrote is true. I was not aggressive, I was not offensive. I just had a disagreement. That in the game is resolved with ‘shut up and sit down’, (you) don’t need to go to the stands. I accept the fine and against Manchester City (on Sunday) I can work.”
Sunday’s match against City kicks off at 12:00pm ET on NBCSN.
