Given the ridiculous, and ridiculously distracting, situation with Richie Incognito and the NFL’s suddenly reeling Miami Dolphins – a towering inferno of comeuppance that is absolutely dominating social media today, don’t you know – it seems like a splendid time to remind everyone the merits of a great locker room.
Locker room chemistry is the perennially underrated element of sports. Show me a team willing to work hard for one another – check that … actually scared to death of ever letting down teammates – and I will show you a team that will be habitually competitive at very least, and one that will probably win more than it loses.
At some point, talent takes over. But locker room accord can elevate a team of “good-not-great” talent into one that is potentially championship material, the Houston Dynamo of the last two years is a brilliant example.
Now let’s circle back on a story that says Jay DeMerit wants to finish his career in Vancouver.
There may be MLS men who don’t respect Jay DeMerit – but I have yet to meet any of them. Even having missed almost an entire season due to that Achilles tendon tear back in March (the ‘Caps’ captain did play a few minutes at either end of the just-complete MLS campaign), there is no reason to believe DeMerit, 33, cannot get the job done on the field.
Assuming he can, the Whitecaps, about to land on their fourth manager after just three MLS seasons, need the stability and leadership he offers. (Not to mention his experience on the field; don’t forget, he was a World Cup starter just three years ago.)
DeMerit’s contract is up. He says he wants to sign up again, assuming management wants him. Word to “management:” You guys want him.
