Sascha Riether and Fulham accept ban for Januzaj stomp

Fulham manager Martin Jol has told the press the club nor player will be contesting right-back Sascha Riether charge of violent conduct after stomping on Adnan Januzaj‘s ankle.

The German defender was caught stamping on Manchester United’s young star in the dying seconds of Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend.

In the FA’s first use of their new retrospective ruling system, a panel of former referees determined from replays that the incident was only partially seen by referees with no action taken at the time.  In the past, the incident would not have been reviewable after the fact.

It is not what you need, but we move on,” said Jol, who will now be without Riether for the next three matches.

“If he did do it deliberately it is fair enough to get three games. The referee didn’t see it. I didn’t see it, but they decided to give him that punishment and people around me said it was probably something deliberate. He said it was not deliberate but he apologised to the club, to the fans and to us.”

The three-match ban is consistent with the punishment for a straight red-card given for violent conduct.

The only question regarding the charges was whether Fulham would fight the FA’s action based on the new format.  The club asked for clarification into the ruling, with the FA’s response being that under the new rules, action can be taken against incidents that are only partially seen by referees.  In the past this was not the case.  In addition, instead of the match referee being shown footage and asked what action he would have taken had he seen the incident, a panel of three former referees make the ruling.

On Tuesday, Riether tweeted his apology to the club and his acceptance of the charges:
