After a scoreless first leg, Cameroon burst to life in Yaounde with a brace from Jean Makoun to win 4-1 over Tunisia and qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
It will be Cameroon’s second straight World Cup, and their seventh appearance in the last nine, missing out only in 1986 and 2006.
The Indomitable Lions wasted no time this leg, scoring through Fenerbahce’s Pierre Webo in just the fourth minute from close range.
Benjamin Moukandjo, playing for AS Nancy in the French Ligue 1, doubled the lead in the 30th minute thanks to a fabulous individual effort.
It got nervy for a bit when Ahmed Akaichi brought Tunisia one back just after halftime, as the away goal meant just one more could see Tunisia through, but Stade Rennais’s Makoun settled things with his two goals just 21 minutes apart.
Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto was fabulous both at the back and in the attack for Cameroon, and he assisted Makoun’s first goal on a corner and also forced Tunisia goalkeeper Ben Cherifa into a fancy save from long range early on.
Cameroon join Nigeria and the Ivory coast as African representatives in Brazil, with two more places to be decided on Tuesday. Burkina Faso will travel to Algeria holding a 3-2 advantage, and Ghana looking to see out its 6-1 lead over Egypt.
