Jose Mourinho: “We’re in trouble” after Chelsea’s defeat to Stoke

Dec 7, 2013, 12:51 PM EDT

Chelsea slipped up away at Stoke City on Saturday, as Jose Mourinho’s men missed the perfect opportunity to pile the pressure on league leaders Arsenal

A win for the Blues would’ve put them just one point behind their London rivals before the Gunners host Everton on Sunday. But instead of building on wins against Southampton and Sunderland earlier this week, the Blues imploded with a poor defensive display that has Mourinho worried stiff.

“I don’t feel comfortable enough to tell you what I think about the game,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “We’re in trouble.”

In the press conferences after the game, and throughout the second half, Mourinho looked dejected and upset by the performance his Chelsea side put in.

Over the past four days they’ve conceded six goals away from home in their narrow 4-3 win over Sunderland on Wednesday, and their defense let them down again during the defeat at Stoke.

“I prefer to be simple and pragmatic and say they scored one more goal than us,” Mourinho continued. “They won and we lost. I can’t go much further than because I can’t analyze with you certain aspects of the game. It is a concern [conceding many goals recently]. I don’t like it, I don’t organize my teams to be like this. Sometimes mistakes kill an organization.”

If Arsenal win their game in hand against Everton on Sunday, they’ll go seven points clear of Liverpool and Chelsea in second and third placed respectively. That is a big gap to pull back and it seems as though Mourinho is growing increasingly concerned not only with the players he has at his disposal, but the lack of understanding they have for his ultra-defensive tactics.

Mourinho has already mentioned he will not be bringing in many players, if any, in the January transfer window to replace his faltering stars that still haven’t go to grips with his coaching methods.

Perhaps that’s why he thinks they’re in big trouble…
