The word that Chivas USA has contacted Colorado for permission to speak to Rapids assistant coach Wilmer Cabrera has a big significance attached to it.
The news came out of last week’s MLS Cup and U.S. draw activities all in Kansas City. As reported, Chivas USA are considering the former U.S. under-17 national team head coach as potential replacement for José Luis Real, who was just a stop-gap caretaker, apparently, and has since been recalled to the Chivas de Guadalajara mother ship.
Here is why this is important:
If it happens – nothing is set, obviously – Chivas USA would be strengthening its bonds with the domestic game. And it could (emphasis on could) mark some acknowledgment that Chivas USA needs these clear pathways into the domestic soccer establishment, that using the little Goats of Southern California as nothing more than a holding pen for the big Goats of Liga MX isn’t working.
Cabrera knows the U.S. game and its feeder systems inside and out. That in itself doesn’t mean Chivas and Chivas USA will flip-flop on all of its organizational strategies, but it would seem to move this thing in the right direction.
The club’s last two managers came out of Mexico. But the team’s closest association with success came under men with MLS pedigrees, Bob Bradley and Preki.
