Snow’s over: Galatasaray finishes off Juventus in Champions League on Sneijder strike

Juventus went to sleep in Turkey with visions of the UEFA Champions League knockout round dancing through their heads. Their match against hosts Galatasaray had to be abandoned after 31 minutes on Tuesday because of snowfall, but the Old Lady needed just a draw Wednesday to advance.

Yet Wesley Sneijder scored in the 85th minute to snare three points on the day and four points from the pairing, sending the Turkish giants through and condemning Juve to the UEFA Europa League.

The play was muddy and cold, far from the 2-2 match between the two sides in Italy on Oct. 2, though Didier Drogba and Sneijder were able to work some magic through the slop. The combination threatened on multiple occasions before Drogba’s knock down found Sneijder for the goal five minutes from time.

The game had been halted after what Bein Sport called “freak snow storms” on Tuesday.

Galatasaray is on to the knockout round for the second straight season. They beat Schalke 4-3 in the Round of 16 in 2012/13 before falling to Real Madrid 5-3.
