Arsene Wenger piles pressure on Manchester City ahead of monster clash

Dec 13, 2013, 9:22 AM EDT

On Saturday Arsenal travel to Manchester City (watch live on NBCSN, 7:45am ET and online via NBC Sports Live Extra) to try and do what nobody else has achieved this season: stop City winning at home.

The Citizens have won seven out of seven in the PL at the Etihad Stadium and despite that daunting record facing Wenger and his Arsenal squad — who lost to Napoli in the Champions League in midweek and drew 1-1 with Everton at home last weekend — the Frenchman has piled plenty of pressure on Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

“Of course [a win would] strengthen your belief, but I am convinced we believe in ourselves anyway, no matter what happens,” Wenger told Arsenal.com. “Let’s not forget as well that if you are in City’s position and they lose, then they’re nine points behind, so they have more negative pressure than we have.”

Mind games from Wenger? Surely not this early…

After their up and down form away from home, City have turned the Eithad into a fortress by outscoring their opponents 29-2 and collecting 21 of their 29 points so far in the comfy confides of East Manchester. With a win against the Gunners, City would temporarily move into second spot in the league and just three points behind leaders Arsenal.

Following their 3-2 victory away at Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, City are brimming with confidence for the visit of the high-flying Gunners.

But Wenger believes the pressure of sitting at the top of the tree is a plus, as Arsenal aim to go eight-points clear of the chasing pack by winning Saturday’s early game.

“We have a positive pressure that we can make a big difference with them, so let’s look at it like that,” Wenger said. “We have an opportunity to make the difference with everybody else [on Saturday] morning, as we play first. We have an opportunity to go from five to to eight [points clear] and that’s fantastic. We have to look at it like that.”
