Toronto have begun what figures to be a busy offseason by officially filling their second Designated Player slot.
24-year-old Brazilian striker Gilberto is the man for the job, moving from Internacional in the Brazilian Serie A.
He bagged 14 league goals last year on loan at fellow Serie A side Portugesa, making him the sixth-highest scorer in the league.
Speaking to the Toronto Star on Tuesday, Gilberto (pictured, right) said his main goal is “to win titles,” but that he also hopes to “open a new market in Major League Soccer for Brazilians.”
Gilberto never really made his mark at Internacional, arriving from Serie B side Santa Cruz in 2011 but only making nine league appearances (three starts) for his parent club, and only made the full 90 on one lone occasion.
He was sent out on loan spells to Portugesa as well as Recife, and this past season saw him make his mark with his first double-digit goal tally.
Toronto also a few days ago inked MLS veteran Jackson from FC Dallas, a move that will most likely help Gilberto, who doesn’t speak a word of English, settle into the club and the league.
If he can be successful at Toronto, Gilberto wishes to be part of the growth of the league as well. “MLS has a lot of room to grow,” the Brazilian said. “I want to do part of the work to help MLS grow up.”
According to the Star, Toronto are still in talks with Tottenham Hotspur to fill its final Designated Player spot with striker Jermain Defoe.
