Despite his busy negotiations with Major League Soccer surrounding a potential franchise being setting up in Miami before January 1, 2014, David Beckham has still got plenty of time on his hands to discuss the team he supports.
Turns out, unlike many, Becks is quite optimistic about the direction the Red Devils are heading in under new manager David Moyes.
In a season full of struggles so far for Moyes’ men, some bright sparks emanated from their 3-0 demolition of Aston Villa on Sunday. With the shadow of Sir Alex Ferguson still hanging over Old Trafford, Beckham admits it was always going to be difficult this season but the former LA Galaxy star believes Moyes will deliver success.
“There was always going to be a transitional period with the manager leaving and a new manager coming in. I think David Moyes is a great manager and a good person,” Beckham told MUTV. “The fans will never forget what Sir Alex did for Manchester United, but there is a new manager that the players are behind and the fans are behind and I think he’ll be very successful.”
This is a bold statement from Beckham, but it’s great to see he’s still supporting the club he loved as a kid, then came up through the youth ranks and had many successful years as a player with. After all, Sir Alex Ferguson cast him aside ruthlessly back in 2003 and has since criticized Beckham’s move to MLS and his showbiz lifestyle amongst many other things.
But the love Becks has for United can’t be torn apart by Fergie’s negative comments. Above all, Goldenballs is a United fan. Many forget that.
Okay, so we’re never likely to see him standing in the Stretford End chanting with the hardcore Mancunians, but it’s refreshing to see an ex-players love for his club remains.
That undying optimism that things will turn around, hidden in every fan, is still there too.
