Vanishing spray to be used at 2014 FIFA World Cup

In what might have been the easiest decision FIFA will make this year, the world’s soccer governing body has decided to use vanishing spray at next summer’s World Cup, according to organization president Sepp Blatter. The product used to spot free kicks and demarcate walls has received a positive response at this month’s World Club Cup, clearing the way for its use at next year’s tournament in Brazil.

The product, long used in South America, has become regular feature in games throughout the Western Hemisphere, including in Major League Soccer. Elsewhere, however, the product is rarely used, with critics claiming the time it takes to utilize the tool needlessly prolongs games.

The World Club Cup in Morocco, however, gave the innovation a test bed for use in future FIFA competitions, with the version employed at the tournament disappearing within a minute of being sprayed. Illustrating what fans of leagues in North and South America already knew, vanishing spray has convinced people of its time-saving virtues, eliminating room for debate about the position of walls.

Emboldened by the positive response, FIFA is ready to push forward with its use.

“The representative of Bayern Munich said that here they can take free kicks with the wall nine meters away, while at home it’s only five,” said Blatter, as reported by Reuters. “It’s a novelty, we will start using it in the World Cup in Brazil.”
