Eden Hazard‘s moment of brilliance in the 29th minute was all Chelsea could manage in a dominant first half that only lacked finish, but it was enough to give the Blues a 1-0 win over Swansea City.
Swansea had its moments early and late, including a near goal off a Jonjo Shelvey free kick in the 7th minute, but the first half was decidedly blue.
Hazard fired wide from a tight angle in the 15th minute and John Terry nearly scored in four minutes later when he connected on a grounded shot that was tapped over the bar by Gerhard Tremmel, service from Oscar.
Chelsea heaped on pressure and finally capitalized when Hazard danced in from the left with clever dribbling before firing low past Tremmel.
Still, it was largely Chelsea and Samuel Eto’o almost netted a handful of seconds into the second half with a point blank shot saved by Tremmel.
At a point early in second half, attempts read 16-5 in favor of the home side.
Swans did well to win some corners late and almost found a late equalizer when Angel Rangel found Wilfred Bony, but his shot went wide.
Ramires picked up the game’s only card with a yellow in the 86th minute.
Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, D Luiz, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel; Mata (Schurrle, 72), Oscar (Lampard, 67), Hazard (Willian, 82); Eto’o.
Swansea City: Tremmel; Amat, Taylor, Williams, Britton, Pozuelo (P. Hernandez, 46), Williams, Shelvey, Routledge (Bony, 76), Canas (De Guzman, 61), Rangel, Alvaro.
