Currently on their winter break in Doha, Qatar, Paris Saint-Germain’s players have been relaxing in the Middle-Eastern sun as they sit atop the Ligue 1 standings.
But after winning the clubs first French title since 1994 last season, Les Parisiens aren’t intending to stop their rapid incline to the upper echelons of European soccer.
After comfortably qualifying for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages this season, PSG are aiming to win the the coveted title and such is the ambition of their wealthy Qatari ownership group that the French club are allegedly targeting a player many thought would never be available for transfer: Lionel Messi.
In recent weeks reports from France speculate PSG are lining up a $360 million bid for the Argentine star. You heard me right. When asked about such a deal for Messi, his former Barcelona teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic had this to say.
“If he’s up for sale then the whole world will be after him, not just PSG,” Ibrahimovic told reporters in Qatar. “I don’t know the situation but I think he’s very happy at Barcelona. The press creates this but only he knows the truth. PSG’s project is to dream bigger but if you buy Messi, you don’t dream bigger, you are bigger.”
With rumors of unrest circling around Messi’s situation at Barcelona as he sits out injured on the treatment table, maybe Zlatan’s words will act as a subtle whisper in the ear to PSG’s owners to pull out all the stops so European glory arrives at Parc Des Princes.
Admittedly this transfer seems highly unlikely, but if Messi does ever fancy a change of scenery or a fresh challenge, Paris-Saint Germain are the only club who could afford him.
