Knee injury for Fernando Torres will have ripple effect through Premier League

Jose Mourinho confirmed after the win over Manchester United that Fernando Torres has an injury to the ligaments in his left knee and will miss at least a month.

Torres came on as a 79th minute substitute for hat-trick man Samuel Eto’o, and has been in good form with three goals in his last five matches.

The injury will have multiple ripple effects throughout the English game, most notably involving fellow Chelsea striker Demba Ba.

The Chelsea manager said he will not be tempted to buy a striker in the winter transfer window as a result of the injury, instead using the combination of Eto’o and Ba.

“It’s time for Demba,” said Mourinho following the 3-1 win over Manchester United. “Demba had a fantastic week and it was very difficult for me to leave him out of selection because he worked very, very well.”

This could have a serious effect on other teams such as West Ham United who may have looked to secure a loan deal for Ba – owner of just two Premier League starts this season – for the second half of the campaign.

Sam Allardyce, possibly now missing out on Ba, also lost out today on Lacina Traore who reportedly will make his way to Everton.  He had been publicly worried earlier this week that the towering striker would head elsewhere, saying, “It’s unlikely (he will sign for West Ham) by the sounds of it. We’re finding it extremely difficult (to bring players in).”

It’s also a tough break for Demba Ba, who was searching for a loan lifeline this January.  The 28-year-old Senegalese international will see some immediate playing time, but is still behind the in-form Eto’o and will most likely be sent back out of the picture once Torres returns.
