Jack Wilshere picks up ankle injury, doubtful for Southampton clash

With just one point separating Premier League leaders Arsenal from second-placed Manchester City, Tuesday’s trip to Southampton is a match of titanic importance for the Gunners. Unfortunately, they may have to get the job done without Jack Wilshere.

The 22-year-old midfielder suffered an ankle injury during Friday night’s 4-0 victory over Coventry in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed Wilshere’s precarious situation in a press conference on Monday.

“We have a doubt about Jack Wilshere, who had this ankle problem during the game against Coventry,” Wenger said.

“But we have three players back normally in the squad. The three are Vermaelen, Arteta and Ramsey. They should all be back and available, but we might lose Jack for tomorrow’s game.”

If Wilshere is out for tomorrow’s match, Wenger will have plenty of cover with Arteta, Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini all available for the two holding midfield spots while Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Tomas Rosicky, Serge Gnabry and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will fill the three attacking midfield roles behind French striker Olivier Giroud.

Wilshere has suffered repeated ankle injuries following the foot surgery he underwent in the summer of 2011 that ultimately ruled him out of the entire 2011-12 campaign.
