As often happens with a club in the Premier League basement around this time, questions soar in every which way about their future.
For Fulham, following the hire of their third manager this season, one problem remains: their second manager of their season is still with the club.
On the heels of Felix Magath’s addition, Fulham insist that Meulensteen has not been sacked, and talks are ongoing as to whether he will remain with the team.
The Dutchman was never formally hired as manager, simply remaining in his position of Head Coach and given what the club called “First Team duties” at the time of Martin Jol‘s dismissal.
Confusion has also surrounded the future of Meulensteen’s right-hand men Ray Wilkins and Alan Curbishley. The latter appears to be safe in his position of First Team Technical Director, but yesterday Sky Sports reported Wilkins’ departure from the club.
They have since withdrawn that report, however, on the heels of talkSPORT’s Warren Haughton speaking to Wilkins himself who revealed he actually still did have a job. Haughton did admit later that “exits could be a matter of time.”
Situations like this are not uncommon, yet rarely are played out in the media like the circus this has become. For example, Roberto Di Matteo still remains on the books on gardening leave at Chelsea despite his obvious departure a long time ago.
However, in this case, the club actually does reportedly wish to keep Meulensteen on under Magath, which could be an intriguing pairing. A lot remains to be seen, and with a must-win match this weekend against fellow relegation candidates West Brom, it’s something the club would do well to sort sooner rather than later.
Felix Magath’s first training session with the club took place today at their Motspur Park training facility.
The new boss told The Independent that a decision on the futures of Wilkins and Curbishley won’t be made until after the West Bromwich Albion match next week. It is unclear if the two will take part in coaching that game.
