No wonder Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil had no chance against Bayern’s big Manuel Neuer

Feb 20, 2014, 8:10 PM EDT

This is the best soccer-related element going around social media today. It’s an old team photo featuring two figures who weighed heavily in Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win Wednesday over Arsenal – a win that leaves the Bavarian giants in huge control of the teams’ Round-of-16 Champions League series.

What if Mesut Ozil had made his early penalty kick? Might that have turned the match, adding yet more confidence into a Gunners bunch that was punching toe-to-toe with its heavily favored opposition?

We’ll never know. The big German wall that is Manuel Neuer stood his ground and refused to flinch – and then palmed away Ozil’s tentative spot shot.

In the photo (Thanks, by the way, to KICK TV for the tip on this one) you will notice the circles around a young Neuer and a young Ozil:

That’s awesome. I love that Neuer was already a keeper at that time.

As for missing that PK, that’s a big reason why Arsenal could use another striker. I mean, Ozil shouldn’t be your PK guy. Look at other top clubs and they have a plethora of options. Ozil taking PKs doesn’t even sound like a good idea…..and that’s before knowing that he’s been taking PKs at Neuer at practice since they were 10.

Apparently this picture is actually fake. Some guy on reddit confessed to it a couple days ago. He just found an old picture with Ozil and circled a random kid because Neuer and Ozil didn’t even play together at that early age.

Don’t say that, erckle. You’ll mess up The Narrative, and in today’s sports, The Narrative is far more important than the game or the truth.
