Jose Mourinho suggests Chelsea could make move for Mario Balotelli

Chelsea. Jose Mourinho. Mario Balotelli… what could possibly go wrong?

On Thursday AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, after Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho didn’t rule out the possibility of Balotelli returning to the Premier League this summer.

As a teenager Balotelli played for Mourinho at Inter Milan and won the UEFA Champions League while the ‘Special One’ was in charge at the San Siro. After switching Milan for Manchester City back in 2010, Balotelli is now back playing in Serie A but for AC Milan and the Rossoneri are having a torrid time this season.

That’s prompted talk of Balotelli, 23, moving back to the PL and with his former boss Mourinho a big fan, Chelsea’s striker search could be over.

When asked by Yahoo about the possibility of signing Balotelli, Mourinho added fuel to the fire with his comments.

“In football you never know the future,” Mourinho said. “Balotelli is with a big club at the moment but you never know the future. They want to keep the best players and want to keep the best Italian players. But Mario has already been in English football before. I’m not going to be manager of Milan or the Italy national team, but he’s a good kid and somebody I’d like to work with again.”

AC are set to miss out on Champions League qualification next season, as they languish in 10th spot in Serie A and Balotelli is said to fancy a return to England this summer. With the superstar striker know for his extravagant ways on and off the pitch (see: “Why Always Me?” t-shirt celebration, lighting fireworks in his bathroom, wearing soccer boots with newspaper headlines about himself printed on them and many more) is Chelsea the right place for him?

He would fit in with Mourinho’s new mantra of developing young talent because, as crazy as it seems, Balotelli is still only 23 and has so much more to offer. We’ve already seen that he can cut it in the PL with Man City — as he scored 30 goals in 80 games for City — and the only reason he left the Etihad was due to a falling out of favor with former boss Roberto Mancini. He can score goals, is driven and able to deal with the cut and thrust of the PL. Even if some question his attitude, Mourinho would be strict on Balotelli and help him knuckle down to fulfill his potential. In the past they had some disagreements, but they figured those out and there’s now a mutual respect with both player and manager speaking highly of each other whenever this topic comes up.

Super Mario and the Special One at Stamford Bridge… like we said, what could possibly go wrong?
