Marvell Wynne is headed back to the middle where he belongs, and he’ll be joined by Colorado’s new captain, Drew Moor.
Wynne spent 2013 as a right back under Oscar Pareja, but new boss Pablo Mastroeni is looking to fix that experiment by plugging the 27-year-old back into the center with a comfortable partner.
“It’s home,” Wynne told MLSsoccer.com. “The adjustment has actually come fairly easily. It’s kind of a comfortable position being back there. I like having to run backwards instead of forward all the time, to be honest.”
The Rapids have yet to open their 2014 campaign, and will do so Saturday at Red Bull Arena. It’s hard to know what to expect from the young Colorado team. There’s an air of uncertainty about the season.
There’s also a freshness under Mastroeni, who oozes the respectability that comes from a distinguished career. According to the MLS site, it’s opened doors for Wynne’s confidence.
“I think I’m just more vocal this year because [Mastroeni’s] tactics and what he wants is very easy to understand,” Wynne said. “So I know what he wants from us. I can relate it easier.”
The leadership will about in the middle with Wynne and Moor, the newly-chosen skipper of Colorado. Mastroeni is gushing about the 30-year-old Texan.
“Drew Moor is the man,” Mastroeni said. “He’s the guy that’s going to lead this team, and he’s got all the support from the guys in the locker room and all the support from the coaches on staff. I think he’s the man to lead this team for this year and years to come.”
