Steve Bruce’s wallet is going to be a little lighter after this post-match interview, but it’s hard to blame the Hull City manager for sounding off after what happened at West Ham on Wednesday. When his goalkeeper, Allan McGregor, was sent off in the 23rd minute, the Tigers chances of winning at Upton Park plummeted. Given there was a possible handball in the buildup before his red card, Bruce is right to wonder whether his keeper should have ever been dismissed.
Bruce’s critiques go beyond the missed handball, though. Even if you feel Mohamed Diamé’s handball wasn’t worth a whistle, the Hull boss had other reasons for questioning Mike Dean’s decisions. Whether it concern the actual contact itself or the ability to call the situation an obvious goal scoring chance, Bruce (in the video, above) finds multiple reasons for feeling his team was wronged in East London.
The play started with Mark Noble loosing possession as he tried to dribble through the Hull area. Bouncing off multiple Hull defenders, the ball eventually went through toward McGregor, with Diamé running in between. After the ball went off the midfielder’s right hand, McGregor crashed into Diamé, but not before Diame had lifted the ball around the keeper and toward goal. A Hull player eventually cleared it.
After play briefly continued, Dean blew his whistle, apparently to account for the injured McGregor (Diamé was also down). Instead, Dean pointed to the penalty spot and showed the Hull keeper a red card, reducing the visitors to 10 for most of the match.
