Life has not been kind for the players of Puebla, and the Liga MX club isn’t making it any easier as they’ve decided not to release DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco Fiscal for Wednesday’s friendly between the U.S. and Mexico, according to an MLSSoccer.com report.
It’s ticked off Jurgen Klinsmann, and one can imagine the move is especially incendiary to Orozco, whose USMNT World Cup fortunes are far less certain than Beasley.
And it’s sure to reignite the old club versus country debate, as Puebla languishes at the bottom of the table towards the end of the Clausura season.
“We are very disappointed in the decision by Puebla,” Klinsmann said in a statement. “When the match was scheduled, it was with the spirit that both teams would have access to their domestic-based players for what is a very important game for those competing for spots in the World Cup.
“Both MLS and most clubs in Liga MX honored that idea. While we understand their position, it’s a huge opportunity lost for DaMarcus and Michael and doesn’t contribute to the continuation of this respected rivalry.”
It’s not like Puebla is a player’s paradise; Beasley and Orozco were among many players who publicly protested unpaid player wages earlier this year. Of course Puebla want the two players off the USMNT pitch, especially considering the pair have been among their best this year (Just check the burners on Beasley on this goal).
