More details are coming out regarding Wednesday’s all-but-announced move of Major League Soccer to grant a franchise to Atlanta.

There’s a press conference scheduled for 5pm ET Wednesday that will feature a “an important announcement Wednesday on the future of soccer in Atlanta.”

There’s no news on whether the soundtrack will heavily feature the Eurthymics like David Beckham’s Miami announcement, but we do know this conference will be attended by a similar civic cast of characters.

Atlanta Falcons (and presumed Atlanta MLS) owner Arthur Blank, MLS commissioner Don Garber, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed and a gentleman named Frank Poe who is the executive director of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority (which I believe is somewhat like the United Nations (That is a joke)).

I have a feeling this announcement will include Arthur Blank announcing that he is purchasing the Atlanta Silverbacks of the NASL and the name will live on in MLS. The Silverbacks name is well established here (Not to mention their colors are very similar to those of the Falcons.) and they also have a training complex about 13 miles (as the crow flies) from the new Falcons Stadium. Said complex also includes a small stadium that can be expanded to 20,000 seats. While the prevailing thought is that the Atlanta MLS club will play at the new Falcons Stadium, it may be a smarter idea to go for the smaller soccer specific facility and if the team needs the extra capacity, they can shift matches to the new Falcons Stadium.

I’d be cool with that. Beyond excited either way!

It’s not a prevailing thought. The new stadium will be constructed for football, basketball, and soccer. Soccer will be played there as soon as it’s ready. However, they could play at the smaller facility, like you mentioned, if they decide to start season play before the new stadium is built. We should find out Wednesday.

Funny, because most Atlanta soccer fans seem to hate the Silverbacks name. They think it is minor league. It doesn’t have the history of the Chiefs or even the Ruckus. Atlanta FC, Atlanta Legion, Terminus FC, Altlanta Phoenix, ect, all have way more support. No way does Blank buy the Silverbacks. They aren’t worth anything, Blank can form his own USL team in a year or two. The Silverbacks either end up in USL-Pro, move, or die.

I agree it would be a great move if Blank would buy the Silverbacks and they get promoted to the MLS. It would be a colossal mistake to give Blank a new franchise to compete against the Silverbacks. I wouldn’t put it past the MLS to do the latter as opposed to the former.

#1. It is MLS. Not the MLS.
#2. No one gets promoted to MLS. Blank will have his own team.
#3. There is no competition. The Silverbacks are a minor league team that draws 4,500. Atlanta will have a MLS team. The Silverbacks already went under once, they can do it again or be the local USL-Pro team.

probably a bad idea but we’ll see.
    so, who’s #24?
